With the New Year comes New Year’s resolutions, and for many people, one of these resolutions could be completing a home remodel. Part of remodeling includes upgrading outdated appliances throughout the home, but is now the best time of year to buy appliances?

According to Consumer Reports, December is the best month to buy major appliances for the home. But, not everyone agrees with this statement. In fact, many other home improvement and industry experts believe the answer is not so simple.

The Release of Newer Models

Most manufacturers will release new models of major appliances in September and October. Although the prices on new models will be high, manufacturers will lower the prices of older models once the new ones have been released. If you don’t mind getting a model that isn’t fresh from the factory, you should consider looking for an appliance during these months. The one exception to this rule is refrigerators. Unlike other appliances, new refrigerator models are not released until the spring, which means discounts on older models will occur in these months, not in September and October.

January Inventory Clear Outs

Some retailers will hold onto all of their inventory throughout the holiday season, and then attempt to clear out any old products once the season is over. Try browsing through retailers’ inventory in mid-January to see if they have started to mark down any major appliances. If they were able to move a lot of product during the holiday season, it’s possible there won’t be any discounts, but it’s definitely worth a look if you want to find the best deal.

Holiday Weekends

Most appliance retailers will host short, three-day sales that coincide with major holiday weekends such as Martin Luther King Day, Memorial Day, and Labor Day. If you can focus on other parts of your remodel until one of these major weekends, try to do so. Keep in mind these deals are usually heavily advertised, so you may need to move quickly to snag the appliance you have your eye on.

Also, don’t buy an appliance just because it’s on sale during one of these weekends. A sale price at one retailer may still be higher than a regular price at another store, so you should do your research and compare prices prior to making a purchase.

Fall and Winter

When determining the best time to buy an appliance, you should also think of what’s in demand for the season. For example, people are probably not thinking about getting a new air conditioner or firing up the grill during the cold winter months. Demand is very low for these products in the winter, so retailers will offer better prices in order to keep inventory moving. The opposite is also true—heaters and other appliances associated with the cold weather tend to be cheaper during the hot summer months. If you don’t have an urgent need for one of these appliances, try to wait until they’re not considered in season to buy one.

Weekdays

Some industry experts believe there’s no right time of the year to buy an appliance, but there are right days of the week. If you want to buy a new appliance right away, visit retailers on a weekday as opposed to a weekend. Try to go to the store during the off hours, so in the late morning or mid-afternoon where most people are at work. There will probably be a lot more shoppers in the store on a weekend, so you will have to fight for the attention of the sales staff. However, if you visit one of these stores on a weekday, you will get more one-on-one attention, and you may be able to negotiate for a lower price. This is especially true if you wait until the end of the month, where salespeople who work on commission may be more eager to meet you in the middle just to close the deal and reach their monthly sales goal.

Which weekday should you choose? Ultimately, the decision is yours, but Thursdays are usually best because this is the day where most retailers will launch deals and discounts. If you visit on a Thursday, you will be able to see what items are marked down before the weekend crowds show up and begin clearing out the inventory.

As  you can see, there are plenty of great times to buy an appliance, so move forward with your remodel with confidence knowing you can definitely find a good deal on new appliances for your home.
