Celebrities have always been looked at as fashion trendsetters, but now, some stars are paving the way when it comes to environmental issues as well. As politicians and analysts debate how to handle global warming and climate change, celebrities are doing their part to protect the environment. Here’s how celebrities are “going green” and you can too:
Protecting the Ecosystem
In between walking red carpets and accepting awards, Leonardo DiCaprio finds time to serve on the boards of the World Wildlife Fund, Natural Resources Defense Council, International Fund for Animal Welfare and Global Green USA. He also founded The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to protecting natural ecosystems such as the oceans, forest and wetlands. Since 2010, DiCaprio’s foundation has awarded over $30 million in grants to fund projects that protect and strengthen fragile natural ecosystems in 44 different countries. DiCaprio is so passionate that he even used his Oscars acceptance speech to raise awareness about climate change.
Building Sustainable Housing
He may be one half of arguably the world’s most famous couple, but that doesn’t mean he’s too big of a star to get involved in the green movement. After Hurricane Katrina destroyed large areas of New Orleans, Pitt founded Make It Right, a nonprofit organization that rebuilds homes for the area that was hit the hardest, the Ninth Ward. But these aren’t just any homes! Make It Right focuses on constructing sustainable and affordable homes for New Orleans residents, and Pitt doesn’t plan on stopping when he’s done rebuilding in the city. Make It Right hopes to use the knowledge of green building and renewable energy that they take away from the New Orleans project to expand into other areas including Kansas City, MO and Newark, NJ.
Advocating Renewable Energy
She may be admired for her work on the big screen, but what she does off of a movie set is even more inspirational. Cate Blanchett, a staunch advocate for renewable energy, was instrumental in the decision to install solar panels and the world’s largest rainwater collection system on the famous Wharf Theater in Sydney, Australia. Although the actress is incredibly private, it has been reported that she lives in a sustainable home that does not use any electrical power. This is one actress that practices what she preaches!
Getting Involved in Legislation
You may know Julia Louis-Dreyfus as a funny sidekick, but her work in protecting the environment is no laughing matter. Over the years, the actress has donated millions to organizations that protect the environment including Heal the Bay, the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Trust for Public Land. Outside of her incredibly generous donations, Julia Louis-Dreyfus worked tirelessly to support Proposition O, legislation that allocated over $500 million to cleaning up the water supply in Los Angeles.
How can you get involved?
Celebrities have more resources at their disposal than most people, so it’s much easier for them to launch a foundation or donate millions of dollars to a worthy cause. Even if you don’t have these resources, you can still find a way to get involved in the fight against climate change. The best way to get started is to download the Homeselfe app to see how efficiently you use energy within your home.
This free app will give you a snapshot of how you use energy in each room of your house and offer suggestions to improve, all within as little as five minutes! The best part? After a report has been created to help you understand your energy use, Homeselfe will show you rebates and special offers from local energy companies to help you save money. Not only are you doing your part to save the world, but you’ll save money on utility bills, too!
